Cathy Mills has been running life drawing classes at the URC for twenty-five years. We sat in the corner of her studio one Wednesday afternoon and asked her what she's learned.
"The room hasn't changed much," she said. "The light comes in from the same window. The same radiator clanks at four o'clock. What changes is the people, and how I look at them."
She talked about the early years, when she was trying to teach the way she'd been taught, and the slow process of letting that go. About the students who've stayed for a decade and the ones who came once and never came back.
"You don't really teach drawing," she said. "You make a room where drawing can happen. That's most of the job."
